Maybe not the Kessel run, but certainly the Louisiana equivalent! Maybe I should back up a bit.

My daughter decided she wants to visit some colleges in the Northeast. My wife and I aren’t really excited about her moving that far away for college, so we conspired to send her during what could be the worst time of year - February . That was solid advice from a friend of mine who went to school up there. It should be cold and dreary with none of the joy seen around Christmas. Perfect!

In support of this plan, my wife found round-trip tickets from New Orleans to New York for an excellent price and I spent a good chunk of my earned hotel points to get them a hotel for a week. Part of what made the flight so cheap is the departure time - 7:00 am.

So, today’s dilemma was how to get my wife and daughter to New Orleans and still get my son to school. I decided that a taxi would be too expensive and I didn’t want to pay for parking for a week, so I figured my only option was to drive them myself. We called in a favor to get my son a ride to school.

I planned to drive back to Louisiana yesterday afternoon, but work conspired against me and I didn’t leave until almost five. Despite a major slowdown due to construction and two wrecks on I-10, I still managed to make it home in less than five hours. That wasn’t a record, but it was a solid showing given the non-stop drizzle and rain. The ladies were still packing when I got home, so I set an alarm and headed straight to bed.

Then I missed the alarm.

W e all missed our alarms.

I awoke at 4:15 . We were supposed to be on the road at 4:30. While we didn’t make the 4:30 deadline, we did make the 4:45 fallback departure time. After we loaded up, the ladies went to sleep while I put the hammer down. Our little Outback made excellent time despite the I-10 left-lane nannies. I pulled up to the terminal and dropped them off. The curbside check- in line was probably 50 people deep, but they had plenty of time to get through check-in and security.

I drove away with a smile on my face. Did I beat 12 parsecs? Probably not. But my ladies made their flight and are off to brave the bad weather in New York. Cold and windy? Perfect. :)

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kinda reminds me of what I’m going through right now.  I’m on call for a region with over 1 million people in it right now.  24/7, all week long.  Every morning I wake up and rush to my phone, afraid it will show 90 missed calls and a text saying “your fired”

This is hilarious. I went to college in Boston. Yea having to walk to class in -5* with 6" of salty slush really sucked.

Hot dog? In New Orleans?

The appropriate touristy breakfast in New Orleans would be coffee and beignets at Cafe du Monde.

Kinja'd!!!

Lunch would be   gumbo, jambalaya, or etouffee .

Kinja'd!!!

Dang, now my mouth is watering.

I’m hoping she gets her fill of it this week. This is the kid who didn’t listen to me when it snowed in Baton Rouge and didn’t put on the extra pair of socks before going outside. She was wearing one thin pair of socks and her galoshes. She didn’t tell me that her feet were numb until after we finished the snowman. She never forgot how bad it hurt as her feet warmed up. I was shocked when she announced that Harvard and Columbia were on her list of schools she wants to apply to .

“Fal lback departure time”

With my family, we always start leaving at least 15 minutes before we actually have to leave.

Only if she can get enough scholarships to cover the cost. I certainly can’t afford it.

Oh, man. I really hope not. I spent several months living in Manhattan after Sandy . Our offices were right across from Madison Square Garden. I can honestly say I would never want to live there.

I usually plan at least half an hour ahead for everything. Even with that, we are often just in time or just a little late.

meh whats a few hundred thousand in loans. Imagine if these kids were seen as an investment instea d of a money grab?

I had the exact opposite experience as a kid. I grew up an hour north of NYC. Touring colleges in March, I went from NY to Chicago to new Orleans. The weather made a wonder case for Tulane (aling with everything else about NOLA)

As a musician, I am pathologically early. If I’m late, I’m fired . If the third row inside second violin doesn’t show up, nobody will know. If the third trumpet doesn’t show up, everybody knows. I’d rather sit at the hall for an hour than risk being late. So  when my kids screw around and don’t get ready to leave for school or whatever it drives me absolutely crazy. The only way I remain sane is to tell them we absolutely must leave before we really have to go.

I’ll be paying for the investments into myself and my wife for another 20 years!

Seriously, treating it as an investment is a specious argument. One study found that private school and ivy league school grads earned more, but that was offset by the larger loans and longer payoff period. In the end, public schools provided the better return on investment.

https://www.affordablecollegesonline.org/college-resource-center/considering-ivy-league-education/

If my daughter can go to Harvard but only pay state-school rates, then we’re onto something. We’ll have to figure in the increased cost of living and the additional travel, but it would be a good excuse to get my own plane! :)

Oh. Wow. This really shows how little I know about the world of hockey. I’m already harassed at work for not following football. As in I didn’t even know who was playing in the SuperBowl. In fact, I still don’t know who played, I just know that there was some bad call that affected a team and they are still bitching about it on the radio.

This isn’t stupidity, it’s willful ignorance. I actively avoid football discussions because I really just don’t care about it. That’s hard living in a state where football is a way of life.

And your plan to send her during this part of winter is absolutely brilliant. :) I love Chicago a lot, but even I hate this place from like December to April. It’s just so miserable with little to cheer you up. lol

I can’t even imagine what NYC is like this time of year ..

I can’t take credit for it. One of my friends went to school up there. When I said my daughter wanted to visit and I thought we’d go around Christmas, my friend told me to wait until February. She said everyone up there is miserable in February.

Eh... if you’re not from Toronto, or maybe Pittsburgh, I wouldn’t count on anyone to know the story anyways. I just wanted to make the joke, because reasons.
